Electric Transportation Innovation

Powering Oregon’s Clean‑Energy Future

Clackamas Community College is stepping up to support Oregon’s transition to clean transportation. Thanks to a $311,779 award from the Portland General Electric (PGE) Drive Change Fund, CCC is expanding hands‑on electric vehicle (EV) education for students, first responders, and the wider community.

What the Grant Supports

  • Two electric vehicles for instructional use
  • Two EV chargers installed on campus
  • Three advanced EV training simulators
  • Expansion of EV workforce training capacity
  • New EV Safety Certification program for first responders and the public
  • Community outreach to rural residents, communities of color, and low‑income populations

These upgrades will double the capacity of CCC’s Alternative Fuels Transportation Technology course and provide modern, industry‑aligned training tools.

EV Safety Certification Program

Preparing First Responders for High‑Voltage Emergencies

CCC is launching a new EV Safety Certification Program to help first responders and community members safely manage electric‑vehicle emergencies. The training prepares participants for the U.S. Department of Energy’s EV Fire Safety Exam and supports Oregon’s new House Bill 3798, which requires EV fire‑response training.

What Participants Learn

Participants receive hands‑on and scenario‑based instruction in critical EV safety topics, including:

  • Types of EVs and drivetrains
  • Battery systems and voltage ranges
  • Interlock and discharge systems
  • How to identify and remove safety disconnects
  • Fireman’s loop function
  • EV firefighting techniques
  • Proper PPE and safety protocols

Who the Course Is For

The course is open to the public but designed with first responders in mind, helping communities stay prepared as EV adoption grows.

Why Electric Vehicles Matter

Environmental Benefits of EV Adoption

Electric vehicles play a major role in reducing transportation‑related emissions—the largest source of greenhouse gases in many regions. Based on the goals and outcomes emphasized in Oregon’s Clean Fuels Program and PGE’s Drive Change Fund initiatives, EV adoption supports:

  • Lower overall emissions compared to gasoline vehicles
  • Cleaner air in urban and rural communities
  • A greener power grid as Oregon’s grid incorporates more renewable energy
  • Better community health through reduced particulate emissions

These benefits align with the Drive Change Fund’s mission to support education, environmental impact, and equitable access to clean transportation.

Community Impact

Clackamas Community College aims to reach more than 1,000 people through school visits, career fairs, and community events, helping Oregonians learn about EV technology, sustainability, and clean‑transportation careers. As part of this effort, CCC is committed to ensuring that clean‑transportation education reaches every community in Clackamas County. Through targeted outreach to rural residents, communities of color, and low‑income households, the college is expanding access to EV safety training, hands‑on demonstrations, and career exploration opportunities. By partnering with local organizations and offering multilingual resources, CCC is helping ensure that everyone can benefit from Oregon’s clean‑energy transition.

How Community Members Can Get Involved

  • Attend an EV safety or awareness event
  • Explore automotive and clean‑transportation programs
  • Connect with CCC for partnerships or training
  • Learn about EV careers in Oregon’s growing clean‑energy economy
